Read on for knowing a bit more about the little known facts about Kutchies!

Language

The Kutchi language is classified as an Indo-Aryan language. As the Kutchi people have often been travelers and traders, the Kutchi language has influences of almost every surrounding dialect, and is thus very difficult to learn and translate. Much like English is a mixture of French and German—with traces of just about everything else—Kutchi is technically a dialect of Sindhi (an official language in both India and Pakistan), but is heavily influenced by Gujarati, so much so that when written it uses the traditional Gujarati script.

Due to their geographical closeness, most Kutchi people are either bilingual or trilingual. Those living in Pakistan typically speak and understand Sindhi or Urdu, while Kutchis of India also speak Gujarati and possibly a dialect of Hindi.

Kutch: the second largest province in India, located in the Northwestern state of Gujarat along the border with Pakistan.

Kutchi: the ancient people group who inhabit the Kutch province, primarily made up of fisherman and artisans. Large populations of Kutchi also live in Africa and Pakistan.

One People – Two Continents

As sea traders, the Kutchi built cities along the trading routes of the Arabian Sea, even as far as East Africa where they established homes 200-300 years ago. Today, these two “halves” of the people group hold to their ancient culture in very different environments.

Culture

The first thing most visitors notice about the Kutchi people is color! As many are artisans and craftsmen, Kutchi women wear elaborately designed clothes made by a unique method of tie-dying fabrics. This process creates a sunburst pattern of intensely bright colors. Beyond clothing, this sort of design is also used to make elaborate embroideries used as tablecloths, wall hangings, handbags, bedspreads and more.

Religion

The major religions of the Kutchi people are Hindu and Islam. As the Kutchi people are split between India, Pakistan and Africa, most of their religious affiliation is often dictated by their location. Most of the Kutchi in India are Hindu, most of those in Pakistan are Muslim, and those that have spread throughout Africa and beyond have either retained the religion of their family or have converted to conform to the place where they now live.

Celebrations

In the Kutchi tradition, almost every phase of the moon is acknowledged by either a celebration, fast, or other sort of ritual. Similarly, every day of the year is attributed to a particular god or goddess. Some days are considered fortunate or lucky, while others carry with them a sense of evil and are thought to result in unfavorable events depending on what is foretold by the Paanchaang, a sort of almanac.

Ashadi Beej (mid-July) Today i.e. 13th July 2010. According to the traditional Kutchi calendar, known as the Halari Samwat, the New Year begins on the first day of the monsoon season, typically in mid-July. This day is celebrated with much joy and color, and typically involves songs by Kutchi poets that have been written to welcome the rains.

Fair of Mota Yaksh (Sept. 15)

This is the largest festival in Kutch, lasting for three days. Legend claims that angels came to the Kutchi people and taught them the principle artisan skills that form the basis of their culture. It’s held each year 40 km south of Bhuj, at the site of the temple that marks the angels’ coming.

Diet

A majority of Kutchi are strict vegetarians, due significantly to the large Hindu population. Some of the Christian and Muslim populations eat poultry and fish, but the consumption of beef is prohibited due to the Hindu culture and pork is scarcely available to appease the Muslim population. Alcohol in the region has been prohibited in modern times, as the entire state of Gujarat is legally dry to honor it as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.

Milk is considered to be a sacred food, offered to guests in order to honor and welcome them. Also, many legal and social agreements are concluded by drinking milk together—including financial transactions, dispute arbitration, and sealing the engagement of a bride and groom.

Economy
Most Kutchi are quite poor, but those living in India have benefited by being in the state of Gujarat, one of the country’s fastest growing state economies. Historically, the major industries of the Kutchi people have been fishing, sea trade, crafts, and farming. Increased Urban Migration has seen many Kutchies moving on to Urban developments, where they have set up themselves as tradesmen, Grocery Store Owners, Garment Trade, textile business, Oil merchants, etc. Sea trade has diminished significantly as a source of income; however, many Kutchi have opened up small trucking fleets & logistics companies, thus continue on in the shipping tradition of their ancestors.

Handicrafts are still very important, with much of the world’s fine embroidery still being made in rural areas throughout the Kutchi region. A few corporations organize the worldwide trade of these handmade goods, but unfortunately few of the profits remain in the region.

Well, thats about it, thanks for reading on till here. Traditionally, every Kutchi you encounter, would sign off by the following line...
|| Jai Dhariyalaal | Jai Jalaram ||

more reading on following links...
http://ren-flora.livejournal.com/71357.html
Wikipedia on Kutch...
Panjo Kutch
India Tourism Board Site

Learn Kutchi Embroidery using You tube...
Kutchi Embroidery

Any more info that can be added here, please suggest by commenting, will try adding to this article. SK had organised for attending a one day session on "Stop Peddling; Start selling" conducted by Mr. Shiv Khera. Having a pure technical and managerial background, and some self help sales training, i found the session an enriching one. Mr. Shiv Khera exposed many hidden aspects of a sales process, which in his own lucid and dynamic way, made me have a re-look at Sales as a profession.

Some excerpts from the session: Who is not selling? A Mother selling an idea to her child, A Politician Selling himself to his vote-banks, A Lawyer selling his client's side to the judge...even ourselves, selling our skills to earn our livelihood...So, everyone ought to learn how to be a good salesman/woman.

He in a way instilled that Closing a sale is all that matters. The world rewards RESULTS, not EFFORTS. A Good idea would never work, if its not worked upon. Only hard work pays...

I mean, nothing new, but his delivery and conviction in himself make you sit up and see for yourself what are you missing or overlooking. One of his lines are : Sales is 90% conviction in the product/service you are selling, and 10% communication about it. Its the Enthusiasm that you have about your product/service that needs transfered in order to have an interested buyer. Unless you are enthusiastic about your product/service, you will never be able to transfer that enthusiasm.

He also went on to teach the AIDA process, the Feel-Felt-Found Formula, the power of open-ended and closed-ended questions and their placement during the sales process.

For those who have never attended his sessions before, I would strongly suggest to invest one day and the moolah to attend him. You would not end being a loser!

Memories of the session in digital pixels below...

all content © Paresh Thakkar. Little did I know what lay ahead.

On my way to the railway station from where I usually board a Train for dadar, the station closest to my office, I saw something that caught my attention.

A middle aged man maybe in His early 40s collapsed on His back cringing His hands and legs. He was froth ing from his mouth and as he fell, had injured his head.

My initial reaction was casual and kind of I do on care. Some where deep within myself I was fighting with myself to ignore and proceed or try helping in some way.

Someone brought a crushed onion and held to his nose. That helped in control ing the situation. However the person who had fallen was in a stupor and could not answer basic questions such as his name or address. The crowd which had collected had by now thinned and only four of us were left there.

It was already getting late for office but I somehow could not leave the scene that way. I decided to stay put and do whatever I could.

There was a private hospital nearby and we decided to move this person there. The four of us carried him to the hospital.

At the hospital, one of us gave up and decided to leave. By now the person had gained some strength and walked up the one flight of stairs to the hospital.

Now the hospital staff took over and treated him well. No one really bothered us with any procedures and this somehow cleared all misunder standings that I had of medical emergencies. I thank Dr amol and dr Sandeep for taking immediate steps to help mr ponkshe (yes after first aid we got to know mr ponkshe)

I thank mr sagar for helping us carry mr ponkshe to the hospital. Another person left before I could ask his name.

This also helped my conscience that would otherwise have been guilty of ignoring a fellow human in need.

This article is an immediate outcome after the incident.

What a way to a new week !
all content © Paresh Thakkar. Thanks to the motivation by my supporters and readers, I am putting across this one.

Though it may seem calm and "lazy" on the surface, there are a lot of under-currents in deep seas.

My last few days have been something similar. The place that I work for has recently moved to a New location and the responsibility of a smooth and functional workplace was mine.

During the move, I was always reminded of "the god is in the details"

The entire project was broken down into sub-projects and targets, objectives, resources & documenting were outlined.

Looking back I am amused to learn that I managed to accomplish the move with relative ease.

Of course the project would never have been a success had it not been for the whole hearted commitment from my work-mates, trust of project sponsors and an eagerness from all vendors involved.

The project has taught me a lot in terms of soft skills and have gained a refreshed technical library.

I hope this update lives up to the expectations of this blog.

One more milestone in my journey of life.

all content © Paresh Thakkar. Its a different feeling to lie down on your back under a starlit sky, and be able to identify the stars in front me you.

Well how I got interested in this topic is a story by itself. I used to read comics of sindbad the sailor and was amazed to know that he navigated his ship with help of the stars at night.

Well this and some other such stories built my curiosity to unravel this ancient skill. Luckily a kind person came to my help and led me to this hobby. Mr anand ghaisas, a teacher of astronomy @ khagol mandal led me to a night watch program where one is introduced to the "Stars of the night". Here the knowledge of the night elements and various objects is imparted and you get to know how sindbad knew where he was going. Check out www.khagolmandal.com If you would like to know more.
all content © Paresh Thakkar. When their lease ended, they'd have to move out of their second-floor suite. The good news, however, was that a suite would be available on the first floor. All they'd need to do was pack up and move downstairs.

It was a fairly reasonable request, so the company's executives signed a new lease and prepared to move. There was, however, just one, small hitch. The nice little server room they built in the back of their office - equipped with air conditioning units, ventilation, dedicated power, backup power, and so on - could not be relocated. Not only would it cost too much, but there was simply no room for it. The server room would just have to remain upstairs.

Obviously, the new second-floor tenant wouldn't want their neighbors walking through their office to access a server room, so building management and the company's executives came up with an alternative: wall off the server room door and build a new one. It seemed simple enough, but there was, however, just one small hitch. The only available wall to install a door was adjacent to the women's restroom. Inside the handicapped stall.

And since you're reading about it here, you know that didn't stop them. Here is the email from building management:

From: ---- --------
Sent: Monday, May 5, 2008 4:37 PM
To: Everyone
Subject: Server Room Access

Hi all.

As you all are aware, we have new tenants that have moved into
the 2nd floor suites. The access to the server room is now via
the women’s bathroom.

There will be a sign on the woman’s door that can be changed
from OPEN to CLOSED and vice versa.

Should you need to enter the server room, please change the sign
to CLOSED. Once you are done, please change it back to OPEN.

Once you enter the bathroom, you will be able to access the
server room via the handicapped stall. Please close the stall
door prior to entry, just in case someone doesn’t see that the
bathroom is closed.

I know this isn’t ideal, but if we adhere to this protocol, I
don’t think anyone will be disrupted.

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions.

---- --------
Building Management

Jen was kind enough to snap a picture of their just-finished server room entrance.
Pictures of the same alongwith the original article is here!!!
all content © Paresh Thakkar. Some of my weekends i indulge in outdoor hobby, my Motorbike and the long roads...

Some weekend, i get up by 6.00 am and mount my bike and head toward either Lonavala or Pune or Some such nearby place...The ride is usually solo or at times with my group of friends at www.mumbaibikers.com .

The roar of the bike, the feel of the breeze thru the hair, flapping of the shirt against the back, feeling of power on the road and a long long long road ahead are some of the feelings that only a biker can understand...

We @ mumbaibikers are gonna go to Leh, the Capital of Ladakh by bike on 28th June. We would be going to NewDelhi via Train, the bikes would be transported via some road transporter to NDelhi and then on we and our bikes for company, all the way to Leh via Chandigarh, Manali etc... From Leh, we would be going to Siachen Glacier and then on to Jammu. Its a total ride of apx 1200 Kms and going to about 18350 Feet above sea level. Its also known as the ROOF of the world, as it is the highest motorable road in the world.

I will be posting live from the roads whenever i get network access.
all content © Paresh Thakkar. I have some hobbies, which keep me quite busy. The following is a list of hobbies i follow, though not in the order of the amount of time they demand on my busy schedule...
Ever wondered how it feels like to be able to speak anywhere in the world for FREE???
well, thats what every Ham Radio operator feels when he/she puts up a radio set, connects to a 20mtr wire antenna and is able to comunicate to a person half way round the globe.
Way back in 1989 when i was studying in St. Xaviers for my electronic diploma, we were introduced to the HAM radio as a additional study material. However, it never struck to me at that time that one day, i would fall for it again. As most teens today do, i was a bit uninterested at that time and let it be. Now, after so many years, and reading about it in the press at the time of Kutch Earthquake, I felt nostalgic and felt that this is what i missed out during my studying days. I immediately started looking around for a HAm training session and came across TARA [Thane Amateur Radio Association] classes. During the entire course i came across some very good people, whose wisdom and practical thoughts are part of my experiences. Learning all about radio waves, radiations, frequency bands, antenna orientations, radio sets, DXing etc, is a very interesting topic and i am following it as much as i can.

Very recently I passed the grade 1 exams conducted by the Wireless & Planning Commission, which means, i am eligible for a Licence to own and operate a Radio set very soon. This hobby is a constant work in progress and a very interesting one at that.
all content © Paresh Thakkar. I have some hobbies, which keep me quite busy. The following is a list of hobbies i follow, though not in the order of the amount of time they demand on my busy schedule...

I am an avid follower of Shri Ganesha-The hindu Elephant Faced God. He is a source of immence encouragement, patience and willpower in times of peril. I was always awed by the various forms a Ganeshji's statue takes in India. I started collecting all unique shapes and sizes of Shri Ganeshji since the past few years. Each of my outdoor/Outstation visit is peppered with a visit to a local temple, where the shopping area is bound to get me access to some new form of Shri Ganeshji. Till date i have some 42 Unique statues collected and occupying a place of pride in my Drawing Room. I keep collecting them, but now its getting difficult to find unique shapes. So its becomming more challenging to develop the hobby.
all content © Paresh Thakkar.
